Job Description

Inova's Fairfax Medical Campus Cancer Registry department is looking for a Part Time Cancer Registrar 1 to join their team.

As a Cancer Registrar 1, you will analyze core information from medical records including demographic data, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease as specified by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and NAPBC standards for cancer program accreditation. To help achieve our mission, you will coordinate, with supervision, cancer related meetings and conferences in accordance with CoC and NAPBC standards for frequency and content. Participating, with supervision, in Oncology related quality improvement initiatives for review by the Cancer Committee or administration is required. Your ability to promote the continuing care of cancer patients through an active follow-up system in order to comply with CoC accreditation standards is of vital importance. Serving as the data information specialists to capture complete history, diagnosis, treatment and health status for cancer patients in compliance with CoC and National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditation standards is expected.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality and security of stored patient data at all times.
  • Under the supervision of a CTR, accurately assigns the stage of disease and clinical codes utilizing the SEER Summary Staging guidelines, the International Classification of Diseases, The American Joint Committee on Cancer, CoC and NAPBC accreditation standards.
  • Decides which patients are eligible for entry into the cancer registry database by reviewing the various case finding sources in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Provides support for meetings to include the agenda, menu, room setup, AV equipment management and attendance as required by the policy.
  • Under the supervision of a CTR, generates statistical reports and graphs from the computer system in a timely manner, dependent upon the complexity of the report and mutually agreed upon with the requestor.
  • Promotes the continuing care of cancer patients through an active follow-up system in order to comply with CoC accreditation standards.
  • Generates appropriate follow up statistical reports from the database on a monthly basis according to departmental procedures.
  • Contacts physicians or patients to maintain the required follow-up rate in accordance with CoC standards and as evidenced through the registry follow-up percentage, delinquent and lost reports.



1 – 2 years of Cancer Registry related experience or 1 – 2 years health information related experience or 1 year of  health related employment or education.


High School or GED - Including or in addition to specific coursework (2 semesters of 'Human Anatomy and Human Physiology) or NCRA-Accredited Associate Degree program or NCRA-Accredited Formal Education Certificate Program., Associate's degree from an NCRA-accredited Program (e.g. Cancer Registry Management (CRM), Cancer Information Management (CIM).
