Job Description

Full time experienced RN for day shift weekends on the Infusion Oncology unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital. This position is eligible for a competitive Sign-On Bonus for external candidates. Candidates who are relocating 50 miles or further are also eligible for relocation assistance.

As an Infusion Center Registered Nurse, you will communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others while having respect for and an understanding of other clinical disciplines. To help achieve our mission, you will use an integrated approach toward achieving desired patient outcomes while ensuring improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in lifelong learning. Providing direction and guidance to others regarding practice while serving as a resource, preceptor and mentor is of vital importance. Your leadership skills in decision making and problem solving are essential. Your ability to provide comprehensive patient and family education including information about treatments, medications, chemotherapy and other appropriate items, while keeping patients and families informed about all aspects of the plan of care, is required. Working with members of the healthcare team to provide patients and families with appropriate resources and support is expected.

Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates effective and appropriate communication skills among healthcare team members, patients and families. Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team and incorporates their expertise to achieve desired patient outcomes. Keeps informed of department initiatives.
  • Incorporates the outcomes of team or committee work into practice. Delegates patient care activities and coordinates unit activities. Integrates nursing research and findings into practice and performance improvement activities. Serves as a role model to others through conduct, communication, mutual respect, ethical decision making, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrates role model and leadership behaviors consistently. Acts as a clinical resource and serves as a mentor to healthcare team members. Identifies own learning needs and develops professional goals. Seeks opportunities to obtain education to enhance practice. Serves as a resource and subject matter expert for other disciplines to provide education, guidance and other support as needed.
  • Remains current of advances in nursing and oncology areas as demonstrated by participation in educational programs, conferences and seminars. Participates in various committees and meetings as a representative of Oncology Services. Orients, educates and mentors new staff in nursing practices and departmental procedures. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to positively impact patient and department outcomes.
  • Develops and participates in educating patients and families at all stages of patients' treatment as well as after being released from chemotherapy treatment. Assesses the educational needs of patients and families concerning alterations in health, the disease process and the overall plan of care. Plans and implements appropriate educational interventions. Evaluates effectiveness and outcomes of patient and family education. Revises educational needs as appropriate throughout the care plan to ensure needs of patients/families are met.
  • Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team including social workers, primary care providers and discharge planners to obtain appropriate resources for patients and families. Remains current on advances in nursing/oncology care and provides such education to patients and families as appropriate.
  • Provides safe, quality and comprehensive infusion services to oncology patients. Oversees all aspects of direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocols and physician orders. Administers chemotherapy, IV fluids and other infusions via peripheral intravenous lines, central venous lines and other routes per physician orders and in compliance with departmental and professional practice standards.
  • Makes sound clinical decisions based on experience, individualized care plans and and patients' needs. Promotes clinical decision making development in all team members. Documents all patient care activities, as per documentation standards, and assists healthcare team members with documentation.
  • Evaluates the outcomes of documentation and contributes to related performance improvement initiatives. Collaborates with the healthcare team and leads other disciplines to meet desired outcomes.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to members of the healthcare team to ensure quality/safe patient care. Evaluates processes to achieve desired outcomes. Anticipates patient variances and makes revisions to plans of care. Anticipates ethical, spiritual and cultural patient/family needs while intervening to maximize desired patient outcomes. Establishes and maintains the care coordination process between the Infusion Center and referring physician offices.
  • Assesses the severity of patient symptoms, communicates to physicians, records significant findings and intervenes as appropriate. Maintains a clean and safe working environment according to established department and Inova Health System standards. Complies with all infection control, quality and safety standards.


Requirements

BSN  - highly preferred. If ADN must obtain BSN within 2 years of hire

Two years of RN nursing experience to include at least six months of Registered Nurse clinical experience in the acute care setting

Basic Life Support – American Heart

Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification (or must obtain within two years from date of hire)

Obtain the chemo card within the first three months of hire--- chemotherapy card from either the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) or the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses
 

Required to obtain 12 oncology CEUs yearly until certification obtained

Licensed as an RN or eligible to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an RN
