Job Description

As a Peer Recovery Specialist you will adhere to Inova's culture of safety. Engage in activities integral to the continued development and success at our sites of care across Inova Health System. Provide non-clinical services and SBIRT screening and follow up intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems. A member of the Emergency Department team, provides peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues as well as to support healthy changes to substance use behaviors for patients with emerging substance risk who may not yet be in need of treatment. The Peer Recovery Specialist will assist in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services. Services will be provided in the Emergency Department with appropriate follow-up.

Job Responsibilities
 
  • Follows all Inova Health System/Unit policies, procedures, and practices and communicates all safety/security issues to leadership.
  • Responds to Emergency Department consults in a timely manner, completes secondary screens to evaluate patient needs, and conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.
  • Identifies patient’s history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.
  • Identifies patient’s readiness to change and uses motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful drug and/or alcohol use.
  • Provides recovery coaching to clients regarding their symptoms and the effects of trauma and trauma history and helps them to develop positive coping skills and linkages to obtain and stay in treatment.
  • Works with Emergency Department staff and Behavioral Health team to identify community support services.
  • Assists patients and families with understanding how to utilize these community services and provides them with recovery support materials.
  • Facilitates warm hand off in linking patients to community support services and substance treatment services including securing appointment and transportation.
  • Acts as a peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate to facilitate attainment of goals. This includes telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support.
  • Uses lived experience with a substance use disorder to engage and direct individuals who are in the Emergency Department/Hospital to acknowledge need for treatment and agree to service linkages and assists in supporting individuals to move ahead on their recovery paths.
  • Engages patients at the bedside and conducts motivational interviewing to understand patient barriers and direct patients to the appropriate level of care.
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support. This includes consults with nursing staff and social work as requested, even if patient does not screen positive.
  • Provides outreach services as requested to educate the community on addiction and how to access treatment.
  • Attends required staff and other meetings.
  • Completes required documentation and other reports.
  • Telephones treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up by telephone with any patient that misses an appointment.
  • Support data collection in support of program evaluation efforts.
  • Adheres to mandatory abuse reporting laws and HIPAA requirements.
  • Respects and maintains professional boundaries and ethics, confidentiality, and honor individuals’ rights and responsibilities at all times.
