Inova Laboratories is seeking a full-time day Histology Technician Trainee to join our Central Lab team. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 5:00pm-1:30am.

Requirements for consideration
Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science to include:
    • At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), Bachelor's degree in a science to include: , OR , Successful completion of a N/AACLS Histotechnican program within the last five years prior to the date of application for examination.
  • OR in lieu of degree: H.S. diploma/equivalent and 2 years as a Histology Assistant or H.S. diploma/equivalent and 1 year of embedding.

Years of Experience:

  • No experience required with Bachelor’s Degree.

  • OR: 2 years’ experience as a Histology assistant or equivalent with 1 year of embedding.

Job Responsibilities

  • Stays informed: attends meetings or reads minutes; signs off on changes, promptly; read e-mail; reads communication log at all times.
  • Successfully completes specific/job related continuing education units annually outside of mandatory Healthstream courses at all times.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned at all times.
  • Ensures that the tissue is embedded according to SOP.
  • Quality blocks are produced to ensure quality slides are made.
  • Any discrepancies or concerns, SOP for Quality Assurance is followed (no more than 4 occurrences).
  • No cross-contamination ( no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies, and assist with continuous workflow by providing work to the table to be cut and per SOP (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Embeds 30-35 quality cassettes per hour (at all times).
  • Recognizes and identifies different gross tissue structures to ensure proper orientation (no more than 4 occurrences).
  • Obtain and organize specimens correctly for further processing, according to established procedures (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Ensure cassettes are labeled accurately, according to established procedures (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Process specimens in appropriate fixatives, reagents, and programs according to established procedures (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Maintain laboratory equipment in a clean and operational state, according to established procedures (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting skills and corrective action skills with any instrument or specimen processing errors (at all times).
  • Understands principles of staining. Successfully stains auto and manually (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies, and assist with continuous workflow by providing work to assistants and per SOP (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Identifies staining irregularities in routine work and QC slides (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Has read, fully understand, and follows the Chemical Hygiene Plan and PPE worksheet (no more than 1 occurrence).
  • Has read, fully understands, and follows the policies and procedures for histology (at all times).
  • Understands the TAT goals set for the department and uses that information to help prioritize the work (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including computerized documentation if applicable, following established policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Such as variance forms, process specimen logs, equipment maintenance logs, etc (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Maintains a clean water bath and cleans water surface between sections to ensure sections are free of floaters and cross-contamination (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Ensures blocks are cut according to SOP. Quality slides are produced. Verifies block and slide ID match with the same surgical number. No mis-patient identification. ONE BLOCK ONE SLIDE WORKFLOW (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Obtain sections for recuts, special stains and immunohistochemical stains, selecting the appropriate controls, mounting, dry time, deparaffinization, etc. as needed (no more than 3 occurrences and as needed).
  • May tackle complex protocols, producing quality slides such as Hirschsprung, liver, kidney cases after completing competency with practice tissue (as needed).
  • Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies, and assist with continuous workflow by providing work to the strainers and per SOP (no more than 3 occurrences).
  • Cuts 15-20 quality slides per hour (at all times).
