EVP Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Job Description
Inova is conducting a search for an experienced and highly qualified Chief Information Officer (CIO) - accountable for driving digital health innovation and improved care delivery through IT in support of its stakeholder communities. Those stakeholders include Inova’s consumers, employees, the clinician community, and Inova’s broad ecosystem of strategic partners. Inova is seeking a new technology leader to accelerate change and drive results through technology strategy, data/analytics, operating discipline, and systems integration and efficiency.
Reporting to the CEO, the CIO is accountable for the planning, implementation, operation, and ongoing enhancement of technology that optimizes care delivery, service quality, and business performance. The CIO is responsible for IT services including digital health, program management, the Inova application portfolio, security, technical infrastructure, clinical engineering, and support services. The CIO will lead a team of 600+ FTEs. The new CIO will be immediately charged with building the go-forward IT strategic plan and the IT team to support that plan.
The CIO is a key leader of the company’s overall strategy and planning process and is responsible for Inova's digital innovation and IT operations. It is critical for the CIO to establish strong and effective relationships with all clinical and operational leaders, acting as a true partner and facilitator of change. This role is highly visible, strategic, and core to the success of Inova’s go-forward strategy.
Key Job Responsibilities
Strategy
- As a member of the senior management team, make key contributions to the formulation of the company’s business and digital strategies.
- Set the digital vision and IT roadmap and lead the IT team in effectively executing to achieve Inova’s strategic goals.
- Pragmatically shift the organization’s focus to a more exploratory / experimental mindset to identify the next big opportunities for the business.
- Ensure broad stakeholder participation in defining Inova’s digital vision and roadmap, sharing ownership of outcomes.
- Align IT investments to address leading / lagging business performance indicators: contribution to revenue increase, margin improvement, customer satisfaction and engagement, and strategic transformation.
Leadership
- Empowering Innovation: Ensure the appropriate direction, development, and ongoing enhancement of Inova’s Digital Health platform, leveraging external innovation and strategic partnerships to create a sustainable competitive business advantage.
- Evolve the digital and mobile experience for all Inova stakeholders.
- Relentlessly pursue IT disrupters and innovations that will drive the next business success.
- Oversee an efficient, effective, and transparent IT governance process that is co-owned by clinical and operational leaders.
- Drive a high-performance IT culture.
Team Development
- Build strong relationships with business groups and their leaders across the enterprise and develop a detailed understanding of their issues, challenges, and opportunities.
- Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders as partners in creating consumer value.
- Maintain focus on direct value provided to the consumer.
- Build alliances with other business leaders, such as HR and Admissions, to jointly deliver business solutions that leverage technology.
- Facilitate alignment of the entire IT resource ecosystem around value opportunities for fluid and dynamic co-creation.
IT Operations
- Oversee the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of IT services that support the company’s operations and business applications.
- Enable collaboration and communication across the organization’s consumers, partners, and strategic vendors.
- Establish metrics for monitoring and managing IT effectiveness and the impact of IT on the business.
- Use IT to improve relevant operational key performance indicators (KPIs) such as operating margin improvement, service quality, and clinical productivity.
- Establish appropriate service levels and processes to ensure that KPIs are met.
- Establish a comprehensive technology innovations program to ensure the ongoing focus on game-changing advancement of healthcare through IT.

- The CIO must be able to provide forward-thinking IT leadership for Inova. Natural leadership capabilities, outstanding communication skills, and a passion around technology enabled change are paramount for success.
- The successful candidate must be immediately recognizable as a leader, bringing instant executive credibility and possessing outstanding leadership skills and team-building excellence.
- Proven leadership experience in digital health innovation leading to tangible business outcomes is desired.

Requirements:
- Minimum Education: A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Advanced degree is preferred.
- Minimum Experience:
- 15 years of technology leadership with experience leading, executing, and delivering enterprise-wide IT solutions.
- Experience leading, executing, and delivering large-scale, enterprise-wide technology and digital solutions with a focus on end-user experience
- Experience working in the healthcare sector preferred.
