About James M. Ecklund, MD

James Ecklund, MD, FACS, is the President, Inova Neurosciences services line and Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurosciences, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.

Since joining Inova in 2007, Dr. Ecklund served in a variety of roles including as Medical Director of Neurosciences, Inova Health System. He has overseen the phenomenal growth of the Inova neurosciences service line to prominently represent every subspecialty in the field of neuroscience medicine. He has helped to advance Inova's research and education programs in neurosciences, including establishing a neurosurgical residency program.

While leading the neurosciences service line for the Inova Health System, Dr. Ecklund has maintained an active clinical practice specializing in complex brain and spine surgeries. His diligent focus on patient care and outcomes attract patients from local, national and international sources.

Dr. Ecklund's primary clinical interests are complex spine and neurotrauma. His research interests include military relevant neurotrauma with a specific emphasis on blast and penetrating injury.

Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Ecklund served for 10 years as Professor and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Program of the National Capital Consortium, which included Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University. During this same period he directed a neurotrauma laboratory at the Uniformed Services University. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and was deployed as a neurosurgeon to both Afghanistan and Iraq. His program received the vast majority of American neurotrauma casualties. In 2011, at the request of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, he delivered presentations to the members of the Ministries of Defense in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on blast-induced brain injury and advanced prosthetic technology.

Dr. Ecklund has authored more than 160 academic publications and abstracts, including a published textbook, and has lectured in more than 20 countries globally. He has served as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals, including The Journal of Trauma, Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, The Lancet Neurology, and Physiological Measurement.

Dr. Ecklund has been awarded the "A" Designator by the Surgeon General of the Army for excellence in neurosurgery, was inducted into the Society for Military Medical Merit, and was elected to both the Senior Society of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of University Neurosurgeons. He has been endowed the LTG William H. Arnold award and the AUSA award for best exemplifying the longstanding traditions of the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Army. He has in addition received the General Graves B. Erksine award as the Outstanding Resident at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and the MG George P Hayes Award for Outstanding Faculty Member in the National Capital Consortium Neurosurgical Program and has favorably received the David C Wherry Emerging Technology Award.

Dr. Ecklund maintains wide involvement in the 'profession' of the neurosciences field and has assumed numerous leadership positions within neurosurgical and national organizations, including Chairman of the Membership Committee for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Chairman of the Joint Committee for Military Neurosurgeons of the AANS and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Washington Academy of Neurosurgery, and Program Director for eight consecutive years of the International Spine and Peripheral Nerve workshops.

He has served on multiple oversight and advisory boards for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Neurotrauma Foundation and Brain Trauma Foundation. He served on the Committee of Trauma and currently is a Governor for the American College of Surgeons. He is also the AANS representative to the National Trauma Institute. He served as the Chairman of the Board for the Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrauma Foundation. He is a founding member of the Mackey-White National Football League Players Association Committee for Player Health and is the NFL's lead unaffiliated neurological consultant for FedExField. He is also the Independent Neurological Consultant for the Washington Commanders and the Neurosurgical Consultant to the Washington Nationals.

He obtained his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy. He obtained his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and subsequently completed his neurosurgical residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1993.

Dr. Ecklund lives in Gaithersburg, MD, with his wife of over 33 years, and is the father of five children and eight grandchildren.
