About Shaima J. Kanak, DNP, FNP

Shaima J. Kanak is a doctor of nursing practice, board certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She worked for Inova Health System from 1989 until 2017 and rejoined Inova in 2021.

With a background in public health, Shaima is very interested in women’s health and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and hematological diseases. Most of her experience is with the adult population, though she enjoys treating children and teens tremendously. As a provider, she strives to be an advocate for her patients. Shaima’s goal is to educate her patients on their conditions and treatments thoroughly, focusing on their active involvement in the decision-making process, which will empower them to achieve better health.

Before rejoining Inova, Shaima worked as family nurse practitioner for Nova Cure Consultant Hematology/Oncology before moving to Tokyo, Japan. Upon her return in September 2019, she joined the Alexandria Health Department (Virginia Department of Health).

Shaima enjoys speaking and learning languages. She is fluent in Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Urdu and Hindi. She enjoys listening to audiobooks, knitting and walking in her free time. Family support plays an active part in her life and work.
