Inova’s alternative transportation strategies contribute to healthier air quality, benefitting the health of our patients, visitors, team members, communities and our environment. Popular modes of alternative transportation utilized by Inova team members include carpooling, taking the Metro or bus, biking or walking, and teleworking.

What we've been up to lately:

  • Bike to Work Day/Commuting Challenge - This year, we challenged team members to try a different form of transportation during the month of June. Many team members joined the challenge and submitted selfies as evidence!
  • Champions of the Commute Regional Initiative - Inova, along with a number of the region's largest organizations, is part of this initiative to help reduce congestion, improve air quality and make the region a more desirable destination to live, work and play.
  • Transportation Demand Management at IFMC & IMVH - We achieved our transportation mandates at IFMC/ICPH and IMVH, which requires a specific percentage of team members to commute via alternative transportation.
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations - In an effort to enhance green infrastructure, we installed four electric vehicle charging stations at IFMC in 2019. We will continue to add charging stations to our facilities as demand increases.

Commuter Shuttle

There are two commuter shuttles that are offered to IFMC/ICPH employees who commute up and down the I-95 and I-66 corridors. (The shuttles were suspended in response to the pandemic and discussions are ongoing to determine next steps.)

  • The I-66 shuttle picks up in Gainesville and Manassas. For more information regarding times, locations, and how to sign up, please click here.
  • The I-95 shuttle picks up at the PRTC Transit Center in Woodbridge. For more information regarding times, locations, and how to sign up, please click here.

Teleworking

Working from home helps conserve energy, avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce traffic congestion. Research has found many benefits associated with telecommuting. For instance, 80 percent of telecommuters say they maintain a better work-life balance by telecommuting, while 25 percent report less stress.

Carpool

To encourage carpooling, we offer reserved parking for participating team members at IFMC, IMVH, IAH and ILH. We also highlight two major carpool programs in the region:

  • Waze Carpool: The Waze navigation app offers carpool options worth exploring for both drivers and riders.
  • Commuter Connections: A regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
  • Reserved Parking for Carpoolers:
    • IFMC: Download and print this form and email to manuel.campos@inova.org to receive a carpooling permit. You must have a carpool permit in order to park in reserved spots. Towing enforced.
    • IAH: There are reserved carpool spaces in the employee parking garage. To receive a permit the owner will need to go to the Security Office to retrieve their carpool parking pass.
    • IMVH: Carpoolers and hybrid vehicles are welcome to park in reserved parking spaces in employee garage, located in the back end of the garage and near the ED.
    • ILH: Contact your Safety and Security Office for details.
