A hands-on opportunity

The Trauma Externship Program emphasizes the coordinated, systematic way in which a regional trauma system provides optimal trauma care to the community. This program is an uncompensated opportunity for college students to participate in an observational educational experience with the goal to give participants an in-depth view into the personal and professional rewards of a career in trauma care.

Externs work closely with a multidisciplinary trauma services team, including trauma surgeons, trauma nurses, social workers, physical therapists and other allied healthcare providers. Externs will also join the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for a ride-along experience responding to emergency calls. During the program, participants will interact directly with trauma surgeons and will be present during daily rounds, patient assessments, emergency resuscitation and surgical procedures.
