A hands-on opportunity

The Trauma Externship Program emphasizes the coordinated, systematic way in which a regional trauma system provides optimal trauma care to the community. This program is an uncompensated opportunity for college students to participate in an observational educational experience with the goal to give participants an in-depth view into the personal and professional rewards of a career in trauma care.

Externs work closely with a multidisciplinary trauma services team, including trauma surgeons, trauma nurses, social workers, physical therapists and other allied healthcare providers. Externs will also join the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for a ride-along experience responding to emergency calls. During the program, participants will interact directly with trauma surgeons and will be present during daily rounds, patient assessments, emergency resuscitation and surgical procedures.

Other benefits to Inova's Trauma Externship Program

Trauma is an unexpected occurrence. A sudden injury, the accompanying hospitalization and resulting recovery can be an anxiety-provoking, frightening and frustrating time for patients and their families. Understanding this process, and how you can assist others who experience it, is key to a healthcare provider's education.

Trauma care is a vital component of a community’s emergency response system. Quality trauma patient care depends on committed people in a variety of healthcare occupations, along with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Inova Trauma Center is dedicated to providing world-class trauma care and is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northern Virginia designated by the State of Virginia and verified by the American College of Surgeons.
