A Message from our Program Director

Stephen F. Stern, DPM
Program Director
Inova Fairfax Hospital Podiatric Residency Program

Welcome to the Inova Fairfax Hospital Podiatric Residency Program website. I hope that after viewing the site you will understand why we at Inova feel that this program is one of the premier podiatric medical and surgical training programs in the country.

Being fully integrated into the GME community has allowed us to offer residents not only extensive hands-on podiatric surgical training but the opportunity to work side by side as equals with allopathic medical residents in a major academic health science center. Inova Fairfax Hospital is located in Northern Virginia, just 20 minutes from downtown Washington, DC. The tertiary, 833-bed award-winning facility has been aptly described by one of our past residents as a hospital offering the clinical training opportunities of an inner city hospital while located in a suburban community.

The Inova residency program ever evolves and expands to assure that the residents get the finest training in podiatric medicine and surgery available. Upon graduation, residents are frequently offered top fellowship opportunities and compete successfully for employment with large multi-disciplinary and orthopedic groups. Past residents currently practice in more than 20 states from Florida to Alaska and Canada. Among their numerous credentials, they:

  • Teach at medical centers and podiatric medical schools
  • Serve as program directors
  • Actively pursue research
  • Present on a national level
  • Become politically active

The immediate past president and a board member of ACFAS and the past president of the California Podiatric Medical Association were Inova residents, as is the current dean of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. Residents trained at Inova have launched their professional careers in any part of the country they desire.
