Inova Fairfax Hospital – a national healthcare leader with a strong commitment to education
Inova Fairfax Hospital is the largest non-profit hospital in Virginia. The hospital trains 20 Inova categorical surgery residents (4 per class) and has visiting residents from Howard University, George Washington University and the National Capital Consortium National Naval and Walter Reed Army Medical Centers.
High volume and diverse cases
Our surgical volume is large. We perform more than 28,000 cases a year including almost 100 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, 200 thyroid procedures, more than 2,000 cardiac surgical procedures, 100 bariataric procedures and more than 600 colon procedures. We also saw 3,139 trauma patients. These numbers give us the capability to educate residents in all aspects of surgery despite a decrease in duty hours. We have hired a cadre of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and house surgeons to maximize the use of duty hours.
A world-class faculty that loves to teach
Our faculty enjoys teaching. Many of our private surgeons participate in our mentoring program, which brings residents to the private setting and integrates them into an office practice. Our residents participate with all the advantages of continual care in a private practice as well as participate in the county clinic.
Our academic credentials continue to grow. Since 2005 we have been a satellite campus of Virginia Commonwealth University and have our own class of third- and fourth-year medical students. Our faculty contribute to numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as numerous chapters in popular textbooks.
We have a truly heterogeneous faculty. Our staff reflects the varied international population of Northern Virginia through the numerous multilingual subspecialties of both men and women surgeons.
Our program supports our residents in numerous ways, including debt reduction and affordable housing options and on-campus daycare. Most important, we want to train an outstanding group of young surgeons who will be able to enter any fellowship or general surgical practice with an excellent education and the confidence knowing they received the best training possible.
