Background Information

For participants who meet eligibility criteria to be screened for lung cancer, Inova is conducting a research project studying the cells of the nose and blood. Biomarkers (a substance in the airway and blood that is an indicator of a condition) have been identified for the early detection of lung cancer. The study is investigating if biomarkers can be used as an adjunct to screening CT scans.

While previously identified biomarkers have helped with lung cancer detection in patients with lung nodules (a small mass or lump), use of biomarkers in patients undergoing screening CT scans has not yet been determined. In this project, Inova will investigate if biomarkers from the nose or blood can help in the screening process for lung cancer. The biomarkers tests are experimental.

This study is being funded by a grant from Inova Health System.
