Background Information

The study is designed to use ultrasound to image the pelvic floor muscles before and after delivery to determine what characteristics can lead to muscle injury during a vaginal delivery.

Eligibility Information

  • Singleton pregnancy
  • Maternal age ≥ 18 years
  • Maternal age ≤ 45 years
  • No previous history of pregnancy of more than 20 weeks of gestation
  • Being able to read and understand the consent forms
  • Ability to comply with all study procedures
  • Plan to deliver at Inova Fairfax Hospital

Ineligibility Information

  • No prior pelvic surgeries
  • High risk pregnancies such as insulin dependent, pre-eclampsia, PPROM, and morbid obesity (defined by BMI >40) will not be included
  • C-section delivery
  • Subjects in active labor
  • Subjects with ruptured membranes
