Learning experiences

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required:

  • Orientation / clinical microbiology (4 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial stewardship (5 weeks)
  • Adult immunocompetent infectious diseases I and II (5 weeks each)
  • Outpatient infectious diseases/ HIV Clinic (5 weeks)
  • Critical care infectious diseases (5 weeks)

Required longitudinal:

  • Decentralized pharmacy practice (~45 weeks)
    • Starting in late August, (two) 8-hour shifts every third weekend in various staffing roles
    • (One) 4-hour weekday evening order verification shift every third week (52 hours
    • (One) 8-hour shift on one major and one minor holiday (additional 16 hours)
  • Practice management (50 weeks)
    • Protocol/ guideline development
    • Participate in interprofessional committees and workgroups related to ID practice
  • Research (51 weeks)
    • IRB submission and approval process
    • Poster presentation at national conference(s) (e.g., ASHP Midyear, ID Week or MAD-ID)
    • Formal write-up of project suitable for submission to a journal for publication

Electives (select 2):

  • Pediatric infectious diseases (5 weeks)
  • Emergency medicine infectious diseases (5 weeks)
  • Solid organ transplant (5 weeks)
  • Any of the core learning experiences may be repeated as an elective

Presentations and required certifications:

  • Continuing education presentation, ACPE accredited
  • Medication use evaluation (15-week block scheduled in Q3)
  • Case presentation
  • Topic-based presentation
  • Other ID-specific training certificates

Teaching opportunities:

  • Serve as co-preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident
  • Serve as primary preceptor for an APPE student or PGY1 resident
  • Provide a didactic lecture in the Infectious Diseases elective at a local school of pharmacy
  • Routine in-services and orientations for new Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)

Conferences: 

  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting (December)
  • Other professional meetings as deemed necessary by preceptor(s)
    • ID Week
    • MAD-ID
