Learning experiences

Learning experiences are typically longitudinal and range in length from seven weeks to 10 months. Hours per week vary by rotation.

Required:

  • Orientation: 4-6 weeks
  • Staffing – retail meds-to-beds: 19 weeks
  • Staffing – specialty pharmacy: 19 weeks
  • Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Patient Management I
  • Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Patient Management II
  • Residency project
  • Ambulatory care – primary care
  • Ambulatory care – anticoagulation clinic
  • Committee leadership with drug class review

Electives:

  • Ambulatory care – vulnerable populations
  • Ambulatory care – bariatrics and obesity medicine
  • Ambulatory care – pediatrics
  • Specialty pharmacy – transitions of care
  • Infusion pharmacy: 5 weeks
  • Medication safety: 5 weeks

  • C.E. Presentation
  • Business Plan
  • Journal clubs
  • Presentations/in-services
  • Patient education materials

Teaching opportunities:

In addition to the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate through Virginia Commonwealth University, residents have the opportunity to participate in the following:

  • Precept advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs)
  • VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations Course (i.e., skills lab)
  • Rotation specific education for patients, students, providers and pharmacy staff
