Learning experiences:

Residents will be exposed to a wide variety of required and elective experiences. The schedule will be determined by the resident and the residency program director during the orientation period but is always subject to change. 

Required (5 weeks):

  • Orientation (8 weeks)
  • Internal medicine
  • Critical care
  • Emergency medicine
  • Medication safety
  • Leadership

Required longitudinal (~45-52 weeks): 

  • Continuing education (CE) 1-hour lecture presented to Inova pharmacists; formulary monograph presented to System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and precepting students
  • Research project: Medication Use Evaluation presented as a poster at ASHP Midyear conference, platform presentation at a regional residency conference and manuscript submission to a peer-reviewed journal
  • Staffing longitudinal: Residents staff every third weekend throughout the residency year

Electives (5 weeks, select 3):

  • Ambulatory care
  • Oncology
  • Informatics
  • Infectious disease 

Presentations and projects:

  • Formal journal club
  • Patient case

Teaching opportunities:

In addition to the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate, residents have the opportunity to participate in the following:

  • Precept introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE students)

Conferences:

  • ASHP Mid-year Clinical Meeting (December)
  • Regional residency conference (April-May)
