The cumulative experience of the physicians, sonographers, and nurses is unparalleled in the area. Our center utilizes state-of-the-art technology, featuring the GE Voluson® E8, a revolutionary, high resolution 4-D transvaginal probe that helps physicians view and detect fetal abnormalities earlier than ever. In addition, the center provides all private rooms for our patients and such amenities as 40-inch high-definition televisions for viewing ultrasounds.
What Makes a Pregnancy High-Risk?
A women’s pregnancy may be considered high risk because of a pre-existing condition such as diabetes or hypertension. Older mothers and women with multiple pregnancies are also considered high risk. Some women are healthy when they become pregnant but experience complications caused by pregnancy. Some parents pass on a genetic disorder and develop a baby with an inherited or growth abnormality. The staff at the Antenatal Testing Center works with high-risk mothers and their primary obstetrician or nurse-midwife to monitor the health of both mother and baby. The staff’s goal is to keep risk levels as low as possible and work toward the birth of a healthy baby. Specialized services include:
- High-risk obstetric consultations
- Level II obstetric ultrasound
- 3D/4D ultrasounds for medical indications
- Genetic counseling/prepregnancy counseling
- Genetic/lung maturity amniocentesis
- Nuchal screen
- Prenatal diagnostic procedures
- Antepartum testing
- Non-stress testing
- Biophysical profile
- Percutaneous umbilical cord sampling and intrauterine transfusion
Genetic Counseling and Comprehensive Diagnostic Testing
Even before becoming pregnant, prospective parents can be referred to The Antenatal Testing Center at Inova Women's Hospital to discuss the implications of age, complications in previous pregnancies or current health problems. Patients with a family history of genetic complications can discuss personalized prenatal options, and diagnostic procedures, and receive specialized support throughout their pregnancies. Unexpected complications that require additional diagnostic procedures can occur during pregnancy. These tests can evaluate the health of both mother and baby even during the first trimester.
The Nuchal screen test can determine your baby's risk of having major congenital heart problems, Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities. Our testing center was the first in Northrn Virginia to perform the screen. Our physicians and sonographers are Nuchal Translucency credentialed by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Foundation.
We provide same-day results with your ultrasound, provided you have your blood drawn a week in advance. For your convenience, patients between their 10th and 11th week of pregnancy can have their blood drawn at our center.
