What you’ll learn

This program is designed for students interested in career advancement or starting a career in the medical laboratory field. Curriculum objectives will meet the standards set by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and will teach:

  • Concepts of clinical phlebotomy and infection control
  • Legal issues in healthcare
  • Introduction to human anatomy and physiology
  • Phlebotomy equipment and supplies
  • Phlebotomy procedures
  • Phlebotomy fundamental essentials

Lectures and hands-on training

Lectures are held three days a week and taught by Medical Lab Scientists, Certified Phlebotomists or other qualified faculty. After lectures, students will be assigned to an Inova care site to shadow and perform:

  • Venipunctures
  • Accessioning
  • Registration
  • Specimen processing
  • Preparation for specimen transport

Program information

  • Hours: 140 Hours
  • Course Length: 10 Weeks
  • Tuition: $1,800, payable in installments (Tuition for 2026: $2,200).
  • Class Schedule:
    • The first eight weeks will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., and will be a mix of online and in person training.
    • The last two weeks will be a full time, in person, day shift externship.

Prerequisites for the program:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  2. High School Diploma or GED.
  3. The payment of registration fee and arrangements to pay tuition.
  4. Signed admissions application and signed enrollment agreement.
  5. All applicants must be able to speak, read, and understand English.
  6. Must be able to work in the United States.
