About Andrew A. Fanous, MD

Dr. Andrew Fanous is a specialty care physician board certified in neurosurgery at Inova Health System. He joined Inova with more than seven years of clinical experience. He has a special interest in surgical management of spine disorders and tumors.

Dr. Andrew Fanous is a native of Alexandria, Egypt. He graduated magna cum laude from Middlebury College, where he completed his undergraduate studies in molecular biology, biochemistry and German literature with highest departmental honors. At that time, he investigated gene expression changes during neural progenitor cell differentiation at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Germany. He received a fellowship grant at the Freie Universität for his work on the purification of a novel protein involved in pain transmission within the spinal cord. In 2011, Dr. Fanous completed his Medical Doctorate with a major in surgery from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. During medical school, he was the recipient of the 2008 College of Medicine Research Fellowship Grant for his work on reactive gliosis in mice following subarachnoid hemorrhage.

In 2017, Dr. Fanous completed his residency in neurological surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. During his residency, he was the recipient of multiple accolades, including the award for best research project from the New York State Neurosurgical Society, the community service award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Louis A. & Ruth Siegel Award for excellence in teaching and the graduate medical education quality improvement award. He is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Fanous completed his fellowship training in 2018 in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the University of Miami. Dr. Fanous' clinical interests include minimally invasive spine surgery and tumor surgery. He is fluent in seven different languages.
