About David S. Downing, MD

Dr. David Downing is a board certified OB/GYN physician. He joins Inova Medical Group with over 18 years of clinical experience. He has a special interest in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and family planning.

Most recently, Dr. Downing served as an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He was also the co-director for the Special Moms, Special Babies Program at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Currently, he is on the teaching faculty at both George Washington University School of Medicine and Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School and served as the residency program director for Inova Fairfax Hospital's residency in OB/GYN from January 2013 – May 2017.

Dr. Downing had an early interest in medicine and medical research. In high school, he worked on weekends and vacations at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York. In college, he published his senior thesis based on the research he did at Yale – New Haven Hospital. His initial interest in OB/GYN is based on his work during medical school with the Hispanic obstetrical population of the South Bronx in New York City. Currently, Dr. Downing lives with his wife and two children in Bethesda, Maryland.
