About Ivan P. Harnden, MD

Dr. Ivan Harnden is a specialty care physician board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He rejoined Inova in 2024 as the System Chief of Gastroenterology (GI) and has been practicing since 2011.

Prior to rejoining Inova, Dr. Harnden worked as a gastroenterologist at Fauquier Health in Warrenton, VA. 

Graduating summa cum laude from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, Dr. Harnden then continued his medical training as an internal medicine resident and gastroenterology fellow at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. Dr. Harnden later earned his MBA in the executive MBA program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

With a passion for patient-centered care and a commitment to excellence, Dr. Harnden began his career in private practice in Northern Virginia. He went on to play a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the GI program at a Virginia community hospital and health system. Now as the System Chief of Gastroenterology at Inova, Dr. Harnden focuses on a collaborative approach and strategic vision aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and delivering outstanding GI care to the community served by Inova.

Dr. Harnden’s clinical areas of interest include endoscopic management of refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) including transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF procedure), endobariatrics (minimally invasive weight loss procedures including sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon and endoscopic revision after weight loss surgery), endoscopic mucosal resection for removal of large polyps, Barrett’s esophagus (including ablation techniques), endoscopic management of complex surgical complications, bleeding disorders of the GI tract, and colon cancer prevention.

Outside the medical realm, Dr. Harnden finds joy in his family life. He is married to an oncologist at Inova Schar Cancer Institute, and together they raise three children. Driven by a love of adventure, Dr. Harnden enjoys spending quality time with his family, exploring new destinations through travel and indulging in water sports.
