Dr. Meredith Gunder is a specialty care physician board certified in general surgery with a sub-specialization in surgical oncology. She joined Inova in 2025 and has been practicing since 2017.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Gunder completed a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY.
Dr. Gunder is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist at Inova Schar Cancer Center, specializing in the multidisciplinary management of complex gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) malignancies. She completed her surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Louisville, where she also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Additionally, she holds certification in HPB Surgery through the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA).
Throughout her training, Dr. Gunder developed a strong commitment to advancing cancer care through both clinical excellence and innovative research. Her research interests include outcomes research and quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and surgical outcomes. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and her work has been presented at national surgical and oncology conferences. She remains actively involved in research focused on improving cancer treatment and care delivery.
Dr. Gunder prioritizes building strong, supportive relationships with her patients and their families. She understands that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and strives to make the surgical journey as clear and reassuring as possible. By listening closely and tailoring each treatment plan to the unique needs and goals of her patients, she ensures they feel informed, confident, and cared for every step of the way. She believes surgery is not just a technical procedure, but a pivotal moment in a patient’s life—one that deserves empathy, honesty, and the highest standard of care.
Clinically, Dr. Gunder treats a wide spectrum of malignant and complex benign conditions. Her expertise includes the surgical management of cancers of the pancreas, bile ducts, intestines, and stomach; cancers and benign conditions of the liver; neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract; soft-tissue sarcomas; melanoma and other complex skin cancers; and peritoneal surface malignancies. She is dedicated to providing evidence-based care and works closely with a multidisciplinary team to optimize outcomes for her patients.
