Sara Bates King is a dual-certified nurse-midwife and family nurse practitioner. She joined Inova in 2026 and has been practicing since 2017.

Sara’s midwifery journey began in 2011 as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, during which she independently researched maternal health and midwifery practices in Indonesia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Italy, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Through this formative experience, she recognized the transformative power of midwives and felt drawn to their wisdom, technical expertise and connection to the communities they serve.

Upon returning, Sara attended the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, where she earned a master’s degree in nursing with a specialization in midwifery and family medicine.

As a military spouse, Sara has worked across the United States including at Brown University Health in Newport, RI and at MultiCare in Tacoma, WA. She also worked in telehealth while living in the Mojave Desert in California and supported her community while stationed in Vilseck, Germany. She is passionate about providing holistic care for women across the lifespan and especially enjoys empowering women throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Her goal is for every patient to feel fully heard, deeply valued and equipped to make informed choices about their health.

Sara is thrilled to be back on the East Coast. She grew up in the mountains outside Asheville, NC, and completed her undergraduate studies at Davidson College in Davidson, NC. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and three children, gardening and making pottery.
