Dr. Sonia Thomas has served as the Section Chief of Ambulatory Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Services at Inova since 2021. She was initially appointed as the Medical Director of Inova Kellar Center.
She is board certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Since joining the Inova Kellar Center team in 2005, Dr. Thomas has provided psychiatric evaluations, medication management and therapy in our outpatient family services and partial hospitalization program. She enjoys working with culturally diverse children and families, and her clinical areas of interest include childhood affective and anxiety disorders and adolescent substance-related disorders.
As the Section Chief, she seeks to ensure innovative, collaborative approaches that achieve a seamless system of care, aligning with Inova’s mission to provide world-class healthcare. Dr. Thomas partners with the Executive Director of the Inova Kellar Center to provide overall direction to the organization and actively participates in developing and implementing strategic direction. In this leadership role, she provides clinical supervision, instruction and direction to the therapists and supports staff throughout the organization. She also provides support, guidance and leadership to the physician team.
In addition to her role with Inova Kellar Center, Dr. Thomas is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at George Washington University in Washington, DC, and a preceptor for nurse practitioner training programs for several universities. She has received several recognitions including Preceptor of the Year, Patients' Choice Award, Top 10 Doctor - Metro Area and Compassionate Doctor Recognition.
A graduate of Goa Medical College in Goa, India, she completed her psychiatry residency at Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC, and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, where she was named Chief Resident. She has been involved with several presentations on mental health in the community and is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
