Honoring donors, supporting families, saving lives

At Inova, donor care is a vital part of our mission to save and improve lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. In collaboration with Infinite Legacy, we are leading the way in ensuring that every donor is treated with the utmost respect, dignity, and care.

Together, we’ve created a dedicated environment that supports organ donors and their families during one of life’s most profound moments. This compassionate approach honors the decisions of donors, provides expert clinical care after death, and offers comfort and guidance to grieving families, while enabling the gift of life for others through transplantation.

With advanced technology, experienced care teams, and a commitment to family-centered support, our donor care efforts serve as a regional model for excellence in organ donation.

Supporting life through organ donation

The donor care unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital is a dedicated, state-of-the-art space operated in collaboration with Infinite Legacy, a joint effort grounded in compassion, clinical excellence, and a shared mission to honor the selfless gift of life through organ donation.

Collaborative donor care team

The donor care unit is supported by a dedicated team of clinical recovery coordinators, from Infinite Legacy and Inova, working side by side to honor each donor and support their loved ones. This close collaboration ensures compassionate, high-quality care throughout the donation process, guiding families, coordinating with providers, and helping save lives through the incredible gift of organ donation.

What to expect at the donor care unit

The donor care unit features private rooms, surgical suites and family waiting areas – all created to provide a peaceful, respectful setting for donors and their loved ones.

By centralizing organ recovery in one location, Infinite Legacy enhances the quality of donated organs, helping save more lives while supporting families through every step of the process.

As the region’s organ procurement hub, the donor care unit plays a vital role in supporting families and honoring donors each year from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.

Stories of the Gift of Life

"I give special thanks to my donor whose selfless decision gave me this second chance. I don’t know you or your family, but I carry your gift with care, respect and deep gratitude. Organ donation is the greatest act of compassion one person can offer another. It gave me more than just time; it gave me purpose, healing and a life I once feared I wouldn’t get to live. I am living proof that the gift of life changes everything."
