Welcome to Medical Physics and Medical Radiation Dosimetry at the Department of Advanced Radiation Oncology and Proton Therapy at Inova Schar Cancer. Inova’s overall mission is to provide world-class healthcare, every time, every touch to each person in the community we have the privilege to serve. Inova Schar Cancer is proud to have excellence as a core value with their physicians and clinical team members. Our board-certified medical physicists and medical dosimetrists work together with radiation oncologists to ensure safe, precise, accurate and targeted radiation delivery for each radiation therapy course.

Technology

Inova Schar Cancer, encompassing five locations — Alexandria, Fair Oaks, Fairfax, Loudoun, and PROC — boasts a comprehensive array of cutting-edge treatment technologies. Our locations are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including:

  • IBA Proteus Plus Proton with two treatment gantries
  • Five TrueBeams with HyperArc capability
  • Four Trilogys
  • One M6 CyberKnife
  • Three HDR units
  • Two IORT units
  • One 3T MRI
  • Six simulation CTs, including a 256-channel dual-energy CT

To facilitate precise treatment planning for patients, Inova utilizes advanced software systems such as Eclipse and Raystation for external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), and Oncentra and Variseed for brachytherapy. Inova Schar Cancer relies on Aria as its clinical record and verification system and operates using EPIC for seamless integration of patient care. In terms of image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), Inova employs various imaging modalities including MV and kV portal imaging, kV CBCT, and VisionRT, ensuring accurate and targeted treatment delivery.

The Department of Advanced Radiation Oncology and Proton Therapy at Inova Schar Cancer offers a diverse range of treatment modalities including: 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, TSET, TBI, brachytherapy (including HDR prostate, cylinder, T&R, T&O, interstitial T&R, Syed, skin applicators and flaps, and breast SAVI), IORT, LDR (prostate seed implantation, Y-90 Sir-Spheres, and Theraspheres), as well as therapeutic radiopharmaceutical therapies. The department routinely performs specialized procedures such as SRS and SBRT.

To remain at the forefront of cancer treatment, the Department of Advanced Radiation Oncology and Proton Therapy continuously invests in new equipment, with annual installations in the main facility or one of its satellite centers. This commitment to technological advancement enables Inova Schar Cancer to provide exceptional care and treatment to cancer patients, solidifying its status as a leading institution in the field.
