At Inova, we take pride in offering a comprehensive range of neurosurgical services including the cutting-edge fields of open neurovascular surgery and neurointerventional surgery.

The field of open neurovascular surgery is a subspecialty of neurosurgery that utilizes traditional surgical techniques to treat disorders of the blood vessels in the head, neck, brain, and spine.

Neurointerventional surgery is a separate subspecialty that combines elements from both neurosurgery and neuroradiology to treat disorders of the blood vessels in the head, neck, brain, and spine using tools such as catheters and stents from inside the blood vessels.

Our team is composed of both neurovascular and neurointerventional surgeons who are at the forefront of both fields, utilizing the latest and most innovative techniques available. We are committed to an integrated, supportive and compassionate model of care that prioritizes our patients’ wellbeing in order to achieve the best outcomes.

Open neurovascular surgery is a specialized form of traditional surgery, where a skin incision is made and the treatment is carried out using open surgical and microsurgical techniques.

Neurointerventional surgery (which is also sometimes referred to as interventional neuroradiology, endovascular neurosurgery, and neurointerventional radiology) is a cutting-edge field in which highly trained physicians employ specialized catheters and devices designed to be used inside blood vessels, along with advanced neuroimaging, to diagnose and treat various conditions and diseases of the central nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, head and neck. One of the key benefits of these procedures is that they can often be performed through small incisions in the skin over the femoral artery in the groin or the radial artery in the wrist, minimizing invasiveness and reducing recovery time.

During neurointerventional surgery, real-time neuroimaging (fluoroscopy) is used to guide the procedure, as the surgical site is not visible to the naked eye. This allows for precise and accurate treatment, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients. This advanced approach to neurosurgery represents a form of minimally invasive surgery. At Inova, our skilled physicians are trained in the latest techniques and technologies, delivering compassionate care with a focus on patient comfort and wellbeing.

When it comes to treating neurovascular disease in the head, neck or spine, there are two main approaches: open neurovascular surgery and neurointerventional surgery. Open neurovascular surgery is a specialized form of traditional surgery, where a skin incision is made and the treatment is carried out using open surgical and microsurgical techniques. On the other hand, neurointerventional surgery involves treating neurovascular diseases from inside the blood vessels using special catheters and devices designed for that purpose. Our multidisciplinary team, which is comprised of physicians with expertise in all facets of neurovascular care, will determine which type of treatment is best for you.
