Onboarding Process

Applications are reviewed during designated registration periods throughout the calendar year.

Steps in the Volunteering Process

1. Attend an Information Meeting

To learn more about our program requirements and service area opportunities before applying, we welcome you to attend an information meeting. While it is not mandatory to participate as a volunteer, we highly recommend attending to make sure our program is a good fit for you.

2. Complete an Application

Following the information meeting, the application will open permitting you to apply. The link will only work during specific quarterly onboarding periods.

After review of your application, the Volunteer Services Department will notify you by email regarding acceptance into the program.

This application and onboarding process consists of several steps, including screenings and training sessions, to ensure that volunteering at our hospital will be a good fit for you and for the hospital. This process is also to ensure that you meet the HIPAA and compliance regulations as a hospital volunteer. Our hospital volunteer onboarding process takes approximately four to six weeks.

If you decide through this process that for any reason volunteering with us is not a good fit for you, you may opt-out of the onboarding process by notifying the volunteer manager.

3. Attend Meet and Greet via Zoom

We will explain the health requirements and steps to onboarding in detail.

4. Training

All volunteers are required to participate in an online New Volunteer Training prior to starting their volunteer responsibilities.

You will learn in detail about the requirements for volunteering, as well as hospital policies, safety procedures, patient confidentiality, infection control and standards of behavior.

5. Health Requirements

The following health requirements are required of all volunteers. Further information will be provided during the information meeting regarding these requirements.

  • Complete two rounds of tuberculosis screening OR one tuberculosis blood test
  • Provide confirmation of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination series and one COVID-19 booster
  • Submit signed copy of Immunity Verification form to confirm receipt of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella (Chickenpox), Tdap for Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccines OR proof of immunity via titer
  • Receive a flu vaccine (if onboarding during flu season)

6. Hospital Volunteer Orientation

Following the successful completion of online training and receipt of all of your mandatory requirements you will be notified of your volunteer assignment and given the date of our onsite volunteer orientation. During the training you will hear from hospital speakers who will further elaborate on the material included in the online training. You will also learn how to record volunteer hours, obtain your hospital ID badge and your uniform.

7. Position-Specific Training

You will train with a seasoned volunteer or staff member to learn position specific tasks and skills. Select positions require an in person, department specific orientation prior to your first shift.

8. Begin Volunteering!

As an Inova hospital volunteer you will have a regular volunteer shift in your department each week. You are now an important part of that department's team, and they depend on you to help make our patients experience a great one! If you find you need to change your schedule due to school, work or other reasons, please work with the volunteer manager on your schedule change. This may require training in a new department depending on availability.
