The pediatric hospital medicine (PHM) fellowship program at Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital is designed to foster the development of hospitalists who will become experts in clinical medicine, education and research. Graduates of our program will be equipped with the skills needed to serve as leaders in PHM, advancing healthcare for children and adolescents.

Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital is located on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, VA, about 10 miles southwest of Washington, DC. As a tertiary-care referral center for Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, Inova Children’s Hospital offers ample opportunities for PHM fellows to gain experience caring for children with a variety of diagnoses ranging from common general pediatric conditions to those with greater medical complexity, which require a more multidisciplinary approach.

Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital at a Glance

  • We are a Level 1 trauma center and have 226 pediatric beds. Our hospitalists are the primary healthcare providers for the 48-bed medical/surgical unit and much of the 22-bed intermediate care unit, totaling about 90 percent of all patients admitted to the general pediatric floors.
  • We are home to one of the nation’s busiest obstetric programs, with approximately 11,000 deliveries per year. About 70 percent of all newborns in the 89-bed nursery are cared for by our PHM physicians.
  • We have a 108-bed level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and 26-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), eight of which comprise the cardiovascular intensive care unit.
  • Our physicians regularly collaborate with more than 20 pediatric subspecialists, including pediatric neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology and others.
  • Our hospitalists also assist with the management of medically complex pediatric surgery and orthopedic patients and provide primary postoperative care to pediatric otolaryngology, neurosurgery and plastic surgery patients.

Stipend

Fellows are eligible for a CME stipend of $1,000 per academic year, which fellows may use to attend conferences, subscribe to academic journals, etc.

Time Off

Fellows also receive four weeks of paid vacation per academic year.

  • Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is situated in the heart of Northern Virginia, a rapidly growing community with a population of 2 million and counting. A short distance from the Nation’s capital and 10 minutes from a Metro station, the hospital is a quick ride to the Mall and U.S. Capitol, with year-round access to the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery, the U.S. Botanical gardens, the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, as well as numerous restaurants, parks and festivals.
  • Professional hometown sports teams include the Ravens, Capitals, Wizards, Nationals and D.C. United.
  • Beaches, mountains, bike trails and more are all nearby, providing wonderful access to outdoor recreation for anyone who enjoys hiking, biking, rafting or just relaxing outside. 
  • Three major airports are all within an hour's drive: Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA, 15 miles), Dulles International Airport (IAD, 19 miles), and Thurgood Marshall Baltimore / Washington International Airport (BWI, 49 miles).
  • The high-tech industry is well established along the Dulles Corridor between Washington, DC, and Dulles International Airport. In addition, Fairfax County has one of the best public school systems in the country.
