Curriculum and guidelines for pregnant residents
In an effort to provide the greatest support to pregnant residents to ensure their health and safety, as well as that of their future baby or babies, the following set of changes was put in place in 2021 for residents that have disclosed their pregnancy to program leadership. All changes will be made with the resident's consent and, to the extent possible, with the utmost regard to their desire to maintain privacy on this issue. The elements of this curriculum were made while maintaining compliance with the rules of the American Board of Surgery and the ACGME.
Supportive policies include:
- No cases longer than 4 hours
- No C-arm cases (angiography, cholangiography)
- At least 2 sit-down breaks during the day each lasting at least 10 minutes
- Unlimited bathroom breaks
- No more than 6 consecutive nights — day limits follow ACGME rules.
- All pre-natal visits are excused absences
- Liberal interpretation of maternity and paternity leave designated by ABS and Inova
- Unlimited excused absences for pumping/lactation room use, which are located in several places throughout the hospital
Single event exceptions to these guidelines may be made only by the resident utilizing the curriculum. Where a specific situation requires interpretation, final disposition will be made only by the program director or associate program directors. Jonathan Dort, MD, FACS October, 2021
