Inova Surgery Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in the Inova Surgery Residency Program!

We are committed to training and producing competent, experienced, intelligent, and compassionate surgeons, ready for independent practice in any surgical environment. Inova serves the communities of Northern Virginia, as well as being a quarternary care referral center for the entire mid-atlantic region. Inova Fairfax Medical Campus houses almost 1,000 beds distributed among Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital, Inova Women's Hospital, Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, and Inova Schar Cancer. Additionally, the Inova system includes community hospitals at Alexandria, Mount Vernon, Fair Oaks, and Loudoun. The Fairfax campus is an American College of Surgeons and Commonwealth of Virginia accredited Level 1 trauma center. The campus also includes an ambulatory surgery center, a regional transplant center, the Inova Center for Personalized Health, and is a clinical campus of the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

We are proud of our program. It is the product of outstanding residents and outstanding faculty. The graduating chief residents routinely complete their training with over 1,100 major procedures, and have been successful in both obtaining fellowships in their chosen fields of interest as well as starting practice as outstanding, confident, general surgeons. Your goals are our goals, your triumphs are our triumphs, and your challenges are our challenges. You tell us where you want to go and it is our mission to get you there.

The program is deeply committed to your surgical education, professional development, and personal growth. The campus houses two simulation centers, one of which is ASTEC, the 7,000 square foot Advanced Surgery and Technology Education Center. This center includes two full interactive operating rooms, as well as the full range of box trainers, virtual reality trainers, endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic trainers. The residents have five hours of protected education time every week to cover morbidity and mortality conference, grand rounds, and dedicated time in ASTEC for faculty led sessions that follow the SCORE didactic curriculum and APDS simulation curriculum. Additionally, a full robotics curriculum is available at both the basic and advanced level, individualized to the needs of the resident. We believe strongly in mentorship, and all residents are assigned both resident and faculty mentors as they embark on what is the most challenging but most rewarding professional pathway in medicine.

Aside from these professional resources, equally important to us is your well-being. With everything from providing every resident their own desk space and computer, to meal tickets for all campus food, to an on campus exercise space just for surgical residents, to an on-site child care center, to our "Wellness Wednesdays" of personal time given quarterly during our protected educational time, and much, much more, we aim to support you on this journey in any way we can.

Those are just some of the elements that make up the Inova surgical residency experience. However, the most important thing to tell you about is the culture of the program. This is truly a family environment, with residents who are kind, friendly, occasionally a little goofy, and who always support each other. So I invite you to take a closer look at the information on these pages. We believe we have everything here to provide you an unparalleled surgical training experience in a clinically superior, aggressively academic, and resident friendly environment.

Thank you again for your interest. We hope to hear from you soon.
