The campus is also home to Northern Virginia's only Level 1 Trauma Center and offers organ transplant programs for heart, lung, kidney and pancreas.
Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is an independent academic medical center and serves as a regional medical school campus. We also provide residency and fellowship training programs for physicians both independently and through multiple graduate medical education partnerships, and we partner with multiple schools of nursing and pharmacy.
About the Inova Trauma Center
Located on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is Inova Trauma Center, a Virginia state- and American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 trauma center with pediatric expertise seeing adult and pediatric, blunt and penetrating trauma patients and acute care surgical patients. Inova Trauma Center is Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma center. We see about 3,000 trauma codes and consults a year, and enter just over 4,000 patients into the trauma registry each year. Inova Trauma Center hosts rotating residents and students from outside programs in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, in addition to our own general surgery residents and VCU medical students.
The Emergency Department receives nearly 400,000 visits per year (adult and pediatric combined). Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital includes a pediatric ICU and Level IV neonatal ICU. There are 15 inpatient (main OR) and 14 ambulatory/outpatient surgery operating room suites. Inova Schar Heart and Vascular and Inova Women's Hospital have their own additional operating suites. There are 7 critical care units: surgical and trauma, medical/surgical, neuroscience, cardiovascular, pediatric, neonatal, and adult intermediate care unit (step-down). The surgical and trauma ICU is an 18 bed unit which cares for 600–700 patients a year.
In addition to the trauma/surgical critical care faculty, Inova employs hospital based neurosurgical and orthopedic departments. The internal medicine hospitalist service is available to provide inpatient medical care. The interventional radiology and neuroradiology services are available for elective services and 24-hours a day for emergency conditions including trauma angioembolization. There exists the full range of surgical and medical subspecialty services including both hospital- employed and private practice physicians. The Emergency Department sees approximately 100,000 patients a year, and Inova Fairfax Hospital also has one of the busiest obstetrics programs in the country, with over 11,000 live births per year.
Critical care is managed by several services. All patients in a critical care unit are required to have intensivist coverage, either through consultation or primary management. The Surgical Critical Care Service provides critical care for all critically ill trauma and general surgery patients admitted to the trauma service, and upon request for other surgical patients when consulted (such as general, vascular, thoracic, transplant, plastic surgery, maxillofacial, obstetrical, and gynecological patients). The Medical Critical Care Service is a hospital-employed service, also inhouse 24 hours a day, which provides intensive care to medical and surgical patients. The pediatric ICU is staffed by pediatric intensivists, who provide a wide spectrum of pediatric critical care and who consult on trauma patients admitted to the PICU.
