The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Inova Women’s Hospital has been training medical students since 1978.
University of Virginia medical students spend their six-week OB-GYN rotation of the surgery, anesthesia, gynecology and obstetrics (SAGO) clerkship with the Department of OB-GYN at Inova Women’s Hospital due to the large volume of obstetrical experiences and diversity of gynecologic services.
Inova Fairfax Medical Campus became the regional medical campus for the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2021. Medical students from UVA spend their third and fourth years at Inova for their clerkship rotations and are with the Department of OB-GYN for six weeks. Additionally, UVA Charlottesville campus medical students spend time at Inova. Fourth year students can pursue an elective in personalized medicine at the Women’s Health Integrated Research Center, where they spend six weeks working with senior scientists working on translational research programs in cancer and maternal-fetal medicine. Other electives include benign gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine and the obstetrics inpatient advanced clinical elective (ACE).
