Did you know that nearly 24 percent of American women are affected by pelvic floor disorders? These disorders, also known as urogynecologic disorders, affect women of all ages and levels of physical activity.

Because of the embarrassment associated with pelvic floor disorders, many women suffer in silence. Fortunately, Inova Women's Services has solutions and enhanced treatments for you. Our dedicated team of physicians, nurses and physical therapists will help determine the most successful diagnosis and treatment options for you – so you can return to a full and active life.

We treat pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence and other urogynecology concerns

  • Urinary incontinence (leaking or loss of bladder control)
  • Overactive bladder
  • Stress incontinence
  • Voiding dysfunction (inability to urinate or difficulty urinating)
  • Defecatory dysfunction
  • Fecal incontinence (loss of bowel control)
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic organ prolapse (droppage of the female organs), including:
    • Cystocele (dropped bladder)
    • Rectocele (dropped rectum)
    • Uterine prolapse (dropped uterus)
    • Vaginal vault prolapse (dropped vagina after hysterectomy)
    • Enterocele (dropped small intestine)

Pelvic floor rehabilitation may help

Physical Therapy (PT) of the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles can improve your quality of life by eliminating or managing incontinence and other symptoms, giving you the confidence to live your life again. Pelvic floor exercises and other techniques targeted to your particular condition will help strengthen the pelvic muscles and pelvic floor, and reduce the risk (or worsening) of prolapse, incontinence, pain and other symptoms.

Inova offers compassionate and expert certified pelvic floor therapists. With a doctor's prescription, you can receive pelvic floor therapy at Inova physical therapy centers through the region.
