Inova Health System’s flagship teaching hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) has been a remarkably robust teaching hospital for more than 60 years. Expansive teaching opportunities take place at the UVA Inova Campus across Inova’s vast regional outpatient facilities, Inova’s Heart and Vascular Institute, as well as, the Schar Cancer Institute and the Inova Children’s Hospital all conveniently co-located on the IFMC Campus or just across the street at the Inova Center for Personalized Health.

Nationally and internationally recognized physicians seek to practice at Inova for its clinical excellence, dedication to teaching, and its vision and expansion into collaborative transformational research. Inova Fairfax Hospital is a nationally recognized tertiary care medical center and students at UVA School of Medicine Inova Campus benefit from the personalized attention and small class size, the expertise of highly respected specialists who love to teach, and a highly diverse geographic area allowing for a wide range of clinical experience.

IFMC is the largest hospital campus in Northern Virginia. IFMC offers students the experience of studying at a world-class medical center and the only Level 1 trauma center in Northern Virginia. Currently, there are 150 residents that span most core clinical departments and several destination service lines.

A total of 36 third and 36 fourth year UVA medical students will attend the Inova Fairfax regional medical campus. The combination of a diverse patient population, state-of-the-art hospital and outpatient facilities plus a committed teaching faculty has created an exceptional learning environment for medical students. Our first cohort of clerkships began on March 1, 2021.

Personalized Attention

The small class size allows opportunities for one-on-one mentoring. Clinical training with patients at the Inova Campus is conducted in an observed, structured environment. Our faculty, which includes experts from around the world, focuses on evidence-based medicine and outcomes. They represent numerous specialties including organ transplantation, cardiovascular care, liver diseases, cancer, the neurosciences and trauma. In addition, our executive leadership team and UVA appointed faculty will instruct students on a full spectrum of quality assurance-based system management and all of the same curriculum requirements as the UVA main campus.

Opportunities to Excel

Our students and residents work and engage with our faculty and fellows in a collaborative enriching environment centered on patient care and the learner for their educational needs and desires. We understand that there is a natural link between research and education. For that reason, we offer interested students the chance to participate in innovative research and the opportunity to publish with our expert faculty. These advantages paired with excellence in teaching have helped our students enter residencies in competitive fields at prestigious institutions such as the University of Virginia and all of the major Virginia and mid-Atlantic programs, many of the Ivy League residencies, and renowned top institutions from north to south and east to west. Before transitioning to UVA, the Inova Campus has matched its student graduates into every specialty field offered. Whether clinically focused or more academic minded, more than 450 graduates have found themselves where they want to be with a greater than 99% match rate over the past 15 years.
