About Alessandro Ghidini, MD

Dr. Alessandro Ghidini is a specialty care physician board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.

He became interested in the field of obstetrics and gynecology following an international summer internship in Croatia from his homeland in Italy during medical school.

“Despite the inability to communicate in the Croatian language, I could sense the privilege and joy to be part of a delivery, a life-changing event for any woman”.

Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Ghidini pursued research in prenatal diagnosis at Yale New Haven Hospital, at a time in which ultrasonography was allowed for the first time to diagnose and treat fetuses as patients. After residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital, he further expanded his knowledge of high-risk pregnancies at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where he also completed a fellowship in genetics, to better appreciate the genetic implications of congenital anomalies.

Dr. Ghidini specializes in treating pregnant women with complications due to pre-existing maternal conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, or whose pregnancies have increased risks for adverse outcomes for a number of reasons, including previous pregnancy complicated by preterm delivery, preeclampsia, or poor fetal growth; twins; in-vitro fertilization; fetal abnormalities; gestational hypertensive disorders or gestational diabetes. “Any pregnancy with serious complications leads to a huge sense of loss; efforts to detect the causes for the adverse outcomes experienced and helping women strategize to prevent recurrences and optimize outcome can provide some relief.”

After a lifetime of research, Dr. Ghidini is currently focused on making the delivery environment safer for pregnant women and their babies by chairing the Obstetric Safety Committee, which reviews every case of adverse obstetric outcomes. He has been recognized as one of the best doctors in the state of Virginia by his peers and he teaches as professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He collaborates with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine in the writing of national guidelines. Dr. Ghidini does not currently perform deliveries.
