Medication Management

There are many medications that can help relieve symptoms of mental health disorders. The goal of medication management is to match a person with the best possible medication by balancing the medicine’s benefit with the risk of side effects.

How it works:

  • The first step is a detailed evaluation conducted by a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
  • After the evaluation, the psychiatrist or nurse practitioner will prescribe medication to improve the patient’s symptoms.
  • Then, the Inova psychiatrist or nurse practitioner will monitor the individual’s symptoms closely, follow up regularly and adjust medication as needed.

Individual & Group Therapy and Counseling

Inova Behavioral Health Services offers short-term, solution-focused therapy to help people facing a particular challenge. Therapy can help individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder as well as people who are working through a distressing life event or situation.

Individual therapy is a way to solidify life changes someone has begun to make or wants to learn how to make. Patients meet weekly with a therapist to learn strategies and skills that will help them cope with particular issues.

How it works:

  • Therapy is structured as a series of weekly appointments for up to 12 weeks total.
  • During the initial meeting, the therapist and patient work together to set goals.
  • Then, the therapist uses an evidence-based, solution-focused counseling approach that may include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, skill building, mindfulness and other techniques.
