Inova Trauma Center – Fairfax: Northern Virginia's Only Level 1 Trauma Center

Inova Fairfax Hospital is Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma center. The designation has continually been given to Inova Fairfax Hospital by the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1983. Additionally, we have been verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) since 1993.

Patients are transported to the Inova Trauma Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital from Fairfax County, the surrounding counties, West Virginia, and Maryland. We treat traumatic injuries that result from car crashes, falls, industrial incidents, recreational injuries, and acts of violence. Our trauma surgeons and trauma team are available around the clock, 365-days a year to treat life-threatening injuries.

Patient Care

We provide around-the-clock intensive care unit management of patients with critical illness. In addition, we routinely treat patients with general surgery needs:

  • Biliary disease
  • Appendix disease
  • Hernia
  • Endocrine conditions
  • Upper and lower endoscopy needs

Rather than being treated by a single practitioner, patients are treated by a team of experienced surgeons, providing multidisciplinary care in both in-patient and out-patient settings. We work with surgeons throughout Inova’s surgical specialties to provide our expertise in critical care situations.

As Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is a teaching hospital, the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery section works with the Inova General Surgical Residency program and University of Virginia School of Medicine to help develop the future leaders in acute care surgery. Additionally, our Acute Care Surgery faculty support an interdisciplinary ACGME-accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Inova's World-Class Medical Simulation Programs

ASTEC

The Advanced Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC) on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is the most technologically advanced surgery simulation facility in the region. The center provides surgeons, surgical residents and surgical teams unsurpassed real-time surgical training and education to improve skills, allow for observation and evaluation, and provide teambuilding opportunities to benefit patient care and safety.

ICAMS

The Inova Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (ICAMS) provides a safe, state-of-the-art environment for a multitude of advanced simulation and teamwork trainings. This 12,000 sq. ft. center is one of the most robust in the region. ICAMS offers simulation services to all of Inova – everything from low-fidelity procedural simulations, high-fidelity patient simulations, and standardized patient encounters to communication, teamwork, workflow and handoff training.
