How many residents do you accept?
We have two residency positions available.
Where do residents live?
Residents typically prefer to live in close proximity to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in the Alexandria, Arlington or Washington, DC, area (or within a ten-mile radius). The hospital is conveniently located near a major DC metro area freeway (I-495), which makes it accessible from all directions.
Do you conduct interviews in the Personnel Placement Service (PPS) during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting?
No. We attend the residency showcase, but do not conduct residency interviews in PPS.
What opportunities does the resident have for teaching?
Residents are encouraged to participate in the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) program. Opportunities as part of the TLC include facilitating small group learning for Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy P3 students located at the Inova Fairfax Hospital satellite campus and providing a formal academic lecture for students at Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy. Residents also participate in layered learning activities with IPPE and APPE students who are completing rotations at the hospital.
Do you have a mentorship program?
Yes. Residents will be paired with two different mentors to guide them through the residency year. One mentor will support the resident in their development as a staffing pharmacist. The second mentor will support the resident in successfully completing their major longitudinal projects.
What is the wellness longitudinal?
Residents from Inova Alexandria and Inova Mount Vernon Hospitals join together for a fun monthly activity outside the hospital. This has included going for walks together at nearby parks and meeting for meals in nearby Old Town Alexandria. The activities are selected by the residents based on monthly themes and one or two preceptors will accompany them for the activity. Additionally, the residents each create a personalized wellness plan at the beginning of the residency year to proactively help them manage stress, and resident wellness is discussed during regular check-ins with the Residency Program Director (RPD).
What are the strengths of your program?
Inova Mount Vernon has a welcoming tight-knit family-like culture. The entire staff is invested in the learning and success of the residents. Pharmacists have strong working relationships with providers, nursing, and other disciplines. Residents receive a strong foundation through core rotations and gain a broader prospective due to exposure to medication safety concepts.
What are you looking for in a resident?
We are looking for residents that are natural leaders, excited and motivated to learn, and that welcome feedback to help them grow throughout the year.
Have you retained your graduated residents?
Yes. We believe retaining our residents is a sign of a strong residency program. Following graduation, several past residents have accepted positions to stay within Inova Health System.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the residency program?
Currently, all patients, visitors, and staff are required to wear a mask and have their temperature checked upon entering the hospital building. Residents are not allowed to enter patient rooms for COVID-19 patients as part of an effort to conserve PPE. Residents are fit tested and provided with respirators for protection when assisting with code response from outside of COVID-19 patient rooms. Residents are also provided with face shields to wear when entering patient rooms for non-COVID-19 patients. To promote social distancing, local and system meetings, daily department huddles, and resident presentations are held virtually.
What opportunities do residents have to collaborate with residents from other Inova hospitals?
Residents from across the Inova Health System partner together to facilitate small group activities for P3 students as part of their Teaching and Learning Certificate. Additionally, Inova Mount Vernon and Inova Alexandria Hospital share a Regional Director of Pharmacy, Regional Clinical Specialist for Infectious Disease, and Regional Clinical Specialist for Emergency Medicine (who also serves as the Residency Program Director for both programs). While on rotation with these preceptors, residents may have opportunities to visit the other regional hospital to gain broader prospective and participate in sharing best practices between sites. Further, residents from Inova Alexandria and Inova Mount Vernon meet monthly for their joint wellness longitudinal.
What differentiates the Inova Mount Vernon residency program from the Inova Alexandria residency program?
Inova Mount Vernon has strong Infectious Disease providers and an advanced antimicrobial stewardship program. Residents have the opportunity for on-site exposure to psychiatry and inpatient rehabilitation.
