Inova’s alternative transportation strategies contribute to healthier air quality, benefitting the health of our patients, visitors, team members, communities and our environment. Popular modes of alternative transportation utilized by Inova team members include carpooling, taking the Metro or bus, biking or walking, and teleworking.

What we've been up to lately:

  • Bike to Work Day/Commuting Challenge - This year, we challenged team members to try a different form of transportation during the month of June. Many team members joined the challenge and submitted selfies as evidence!
  • Champions of the Commute Regional Initiative - Inova, along with a number of the region's largest organizations, is part of this initiative to help reduce congestion, improve air quality and make the region a more desirable destination to live, work and play.
  • Transportation Demand Management at IFMC & IMVH - We achieved our transportation mandates at IFMC/ICPH and IMVH, which requires a specific percentage of team members to commute via alternative transportation.
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations - In an effort to enhance green infrastructure, we installed four electric vehicle charging stations at IFMC in 2019. We will continue to add charging stations to our facilities as demand increases.

Working from home helps conserve energy, avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce traffic congestion. Research has found many benefits associated with telecommuting. For instance, 80 percent of telecommuters say they maintain a better work-life balance by telecommuting, while 25 percent report less stress.

To encourage carpooling, we offer reserved parking for participating team members at IFMC, IMVH, IAH and ILH.

  • Commuter Connections: A regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Learn more
