Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program: FAQs

How long has IFMC's PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program existed?

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has been training pharmacy residents since 1989. The program became ASHP accredited in 1990. Our residents have gone on to pursue successful careers in many areas of pharmacy practice. 2020 marks the 31st year of our PGY1 Program.

How many residents do you accept?

We have four positions available.

How does the clinical on call program work?

The PGY1 residents rotate as the clinical pharmacist-on-call (COC) with members of their residency class (including PGY2s) approximately every 6 weeks.

Responsibilities of the COC may include responding to drug information questions, assisting with management of medication problems and other issues not resolvable by the pharmacist on duty.

Additional responsibilities the resident will hold while on-call include implementation of any ongoing clinical initiatives that are being conducted by the Department of Pharmacy and serving as a clinical pharmacotherapy resource to members of the pharmacy and medical staff.

Where is Inova Fairfax Medical Campus located?

Inova Fairfax is located in Falls Church, VA, within the Washington, DC metropolitan area near a major freeway (the capital beltway). The hospital is fairly accessible from all directions, including a nearby Metro station with shuttle service to the hospital campus.

Do you conduct interviews in the Personnel Placement Service (PPS) during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting?

No. We attend the resident showcase, but do not conduct PGY1 residency interviews (only PGY2 interviews) at PPS.

How will interviews be conducted for the 2020-2021 application cycle?

The application process will continue via PhORCAS and qualified applicants selected for an interview will be invited to complete a virtual or on-site (if possible) interview in early to mid-February.
