Before your procedure

Thank you for choosing Inova for your upcoming procedure. We strive to provide the highest quality care in a safe environment. At Inova, you will always be treated with compassion and concern.

All patients receiving anesthesia must have an assessment interview by phone, video, or an in-person appointment. This evaluation assesses medical factors that may affect the timing of your procedure and identifies underlying conditions that may require evaluation or management.

Our services

  • Pre-anesthesia assessment with an advanced practice provider or pre-procedural telephone nurse
  • Pre-procedural and day of procedure instruction and education, including fasting and medication instructions
  • Evaluation of test results with notification to referring practice for any issues requiring follow-up
  • Review for completeness of required Inova documentation, external testing results, medical history and physical examination, consent forms and advance directives

Make an appointment

  • If you have access to MyChart, please log in to complete your medical history questionnaire online. You will then be prompted to schedule an appointment.
  • If you are a new user and do not have access to MyChart, please sign up now. Once registered, you can log in to complete your medical history questionnaire online and schedule an appointment.
  • The pre-procedure interview usually takes 30 – 90 minutes and may happen via phone, video or in person based on your needs.
  • If you need additional assistance, please call the location in which your procedure will be performed.

Please carefully review both the important notes below and the full instruction PDF  if your procedure involves anesthesia or sedation. The notes below highlight key information but do not include all preparation instructions. Not following these guidelines may increase your risk of complications and result in your procedure being delayed or rescheduled. 

Important notes: 

  • Do not start a GLP-1 medication (i.e. Wegovy ®, Ozempic ®, Mounjaro ®, Zepbound ® or others) until after your procedure. 
  • If you stopped a GLP-1 medication in the last 5 weeks, you must follow the GLP-1 special diet and 
    fasting instructions. Please tell your provider that you stopped this medication before your procedure. 
  • Patients with delayed gastric emptying must follow a low-fat diet with easy‑to‑digest foods starting 48 hours prior to scheduled procedure. 
  • Fasting longer is safer and helps reduce the risk of complications. If your surgeon asks you to fast 
    longer than these guidelines, follow your surgeon’s instructions. If the fasting time is shorter, follow the guidelines in this document:
