Before your procedure

Thank you for choosing Inova for your upcoming procedure. We strive to provide the highest quality care in a safe environment. At Inova, you will always be treated with compassion and concern.

All patients receiving anesthesia must have an assessment interview by phone, video, or an in-person appointment. This evaluation assesses medical factors that may affect the timing of your procedure and identifies underlying conditions that may require evaluation or management.

Our services

  • Pre-anesthesia assessment with an advanced practice provider or pre-procedural telephone nurse
  • Pre-procedural and day of procedure instruction and education, including fasting and medication instructions
  • Evaluation of test results with notification to referring practice for any issues requiring follow-up
  • Review for completeness of required Inova documentation, external testing results, medical history and physical examination, consent forms and advance directives

Make an appointment

  • If you have access to MyChart, please log in to complete your medical history questionnaire online. You will then be prompted to schedule an appointment.
  • If you are a new user and do not have access to MyChart, please sign up now. Once registered, you can log in to complete your medical history questionnaire online and schedule an appointment.
  • The pre-procedure interview usually takes 30 – 90 minutes and may happen via phone, video or in person based on your needs.
  • If you need additional assistance, please call the location in which your procedure will be performed.

Carefully follow fasting instructions if your procedure involves anesthesia or sedation. 

Not following these guidelines may increase your risk of serious complications and could result in cancellation of your procedure.

  • If your surgeon or proceduralist has provided dietary instructions that differ from those listed here, always follow the most restrictive guidance. 
  • IMPORTANT FOR GLP-1 PATIENTS:
    • If you take a GLP-1 medication for diabetes or weight loss (such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, or Zepbound), these medications can slow stomach emptying. 
    • You must have NO solid food or non-clear liquids for 24 hours before surgery.
  • Failure to follow fasting guidelines may result in procedure delays or cancellation.
